Over 40 Fashion Sense…eh…screw it

Fashion Sense?  Mine is…well….hmmmm…..

It’s not that I don’t care what I look like on a daily basis. It’s more or less lack of time. It’s just easier to clip my hair up and throw on whatever I bothered to throw in the wash. Did I mention I have children?!? And honestly, I love them all dearly…truly I do… but how do I find the time for anything, let alone dressing up?

If you’re over 40, you know the struggle. Everything takes longer. It’s not as simple as it used to be. And 90% of the time, I’m driving kids from point A to point B. I’d make a fortune as a taxi service, if I started charging my kids for services. Add my job to the mix and forget about it! Zero time.

I mean …I’m currently writing this at 11:18 PM just so I can be alone for 10 minutes!

I-m-in-a-dark-place-right-now-Not-emotionally-just.jpeg

Basically…it’s just too much work to bother.. My hair is thinner now …

I am 41.

Did I forget to mention that?

Essentially, I have to ‘fake it’ with my hair. This typically requires curling and teasing, then a lifting spray. My hairs rather long, so it can be hard to get a decent lift. I have cut it in the past, but I hated it! Mostly because I couldn’t just throw it in a bun anymore. Styling takes time. I believe we have established…I have none. And just this year, I started finding  WHITE HAIRS! No…really….ugh. I pulled them out, but it was no use. The bastards grew back. You can’t really see them, but I assure you…

they’re still fricken there!

And my face….well….what do I not have to complain about here???

  • dry skin
  • age spots
  • crows feet
  • those weird forehead wrinkles…crap I hate those things!!!!
  • yellow bumps from skin damage…on my EYEBALLS! It’s called Pinguecula
  • receding gums…it’s mild, but it’s there
  • dark circles…ugh…just shoot me
  • red blemishes just below my neck…again…too much sun

Basically…a boat load of spackle is required, and I flat out don’t feel like dealing with it. I don’t want to deal with primers and foundations (and I don’t really give a shit how light and fluffy it is advertised to be)… glosses, mascara, powders and shadows. I’m not trying to go all ‘Rembrandt’  first thing in the morning. It’s hard enough to find the time to drink my required two gallons of coffee  just to function!.

As far as clothing goes…ugh…here we go again….

  • I’m thin…but…I’m saggy, so not proportioned.
  • My butt has either morphed or melted into the back of my upper thighs. Belts are now required!!!

56408829.jpg

  • Where in the name of  Zeus’s pie-hole… did my boobs go?!?! And why do they feel the need to hide in my armpits when I’m laying down?!?! WHY????

wonderbra

  • Veins…seriously….do I really need to elaborate here?
  • Feet…ugh..ok…four kids in and flat as the earth is wide. “Forget about it” <—this must be said in a strong Italian accent.
  • It’s not that I have a gut. It’s that I have no lift. Because if I push my boobs up to their proper location…my stomach is flat as a board. Some of you will totally get what I mean. (This also works with my butt…my thighs basically fade away if I yank my butt up to it’s proper place…not that I’m running around yanking on my butt or anything…maybe).

I mean …

why bother???

And did I mention the popping sounds? Yes…crap just pops for any reason at all. Standing up? Pop. Sitting down? Pop. Walking? Pop. Bending over? Pop. Everything pops…every-fricken-thing.

And I haven’t even hit menopause yet?!?!

WTF will that be like?!?!?!

  • hot flashes?
  • mood swings?
  • weird hair growth locations?
  • Dammit….is this a cocka-may-mee mood swing?!?!?

Whatever…you know…I intended for this to be a post about  Fashion Over 40. As in; hot spring clothing trends and hairstyles.

But now I just want a cookie and a glass of wine. (Wait…wine just means I’ll have to pee again in two minutes. I think I’ll try to keep the peeing at my usual 5 minute intervals tonight).

Top Ten Ways To Make Money From Home

After careful research, I’ve come up with a list of  “Top Ten Ways To Make Money From Home”. Having been a stay-at-home-mom, I completely get the whole ‘short on cash’ thing. It can be hard to come up with extra ways to save, when you’ve got mouths to feed. Not to mention often times it’s cheaper to stay home, then it is to pay for daycare! That’s actually why I didn’t leave the house for around 14 years.

So without further delay, here’s my list:

SWAGBUCKS – essentially, SWAGBUCKS pays you to watch videos, check your email, take surveys, play games  and browse the net. It’s a rewards sight with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Sign up here and get 5$ from SWAGBUCKS. (Link opens in new tab).

WRITE AN ARTICLE – Content sites generally pay well for well written articles.

*The Dollar Stretcher: Articles on ‘Living Better for Less’

*MATADOR: “original writing and visual storytelling about travel, culture, and political commentary

CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET –

thredUP – Sell your stuff! Specifically clothing.

SELL YOUR PHOTOS –

Have a some amazing pics? Good enough to sell? Try FOAP. FOAP buys photos for companies to use in their advertising.

GIVE ADVICE –

Try AMMAS. Whatever you’re an expert on, can get you cash! Just sign up.

FLIP ITEMS –

This one is actually kind of fun! Find freebies anywhere and everywhere. Curbside, Free-Cycle sites,  Craigslist etc…Then flip them for cold hard cash! One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!

SELL YOUR ARTS AND CRAFTS –

The best sell site for crafts,  is ETSY. However AMAZON, while not specifically a craft site, may be another option. But Amazon charges 3.99$ a month to sell. I don’t mess with EBAY anymore. But that’s my own personal choice.

BECOME AN AUTHOR –

Write books for Kindle.

MAKE LISTS –

Try LISTVERSE. This site pays for nothing but lists! Seriously. Lots and lots of lists!

CREATE AMAZING YOUTUBE VIDEOS –

YOUTUBE pays! Seriously. As long as what you video is something others will actually want to watch. Simply click on the Creator Studio under your YOUTUBE handle. Just don’t include any licensed songs or copied material. It must belong to ONLY you.

I could actually make this list quite a bit longer, but I need to call it quits for tonight. I’ll add more when I can. But currently I have a house full of 12 year-olds…oh…yay…

33 Amazing Sculptures From Around The World

33 Amazing Sculptures From Around The World

I’m smack in the middle of the biggest artist’s block known to man. I’ve got  canvas, acrylics, oils, brushes etc…and my mind is blank. This is typically when I Google search ‘madness’, so to to speak. Randomly typing in the first words that come to mind. The ‘images’ feature, by far, is my favorite Google feature. Today’s search was so fascinating, I feel the need to share. Maybe it’ll help you with your artist’s block, inspire a novel or just help you unwind. Today’s search : Odd Sculptures

Which ones are beacons of hope, fantasy and illusion? Which ones are the artist’s amazing rendering of their waking nightmare?  You decide.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m either sleeping with the lights on tonight….or grabbing a bowl of popcorn and watching Stephen King movies…but I’m definitely inspired.

DIY Pottery Barn Hacks

As much as I’d love to toss aside $50 like it’s nothing, I would be doing myself a huge disservice. I like Pottery Barn and IKEA as much as anyone else, but money is money. You’ll get it away from me, when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

You know what they say: Necessity is the mother of invention…or in the this case, ‘wanting’ and ‘frugality’. But before we go any further, I want to be clear…decorative items are just that…DECORATIVE. They serve a visual purpose only. I’ve often shook my head in disbelief at the large sums of money that people throw away to essentially STARE AT AN OBJECT! Appliances, bedding etc…of course, buy new and with a warranty. But to look at something across the room?! What a waste.

Here are a couple of items directly from the Pottery Barn website….

The vases above,  have the same appearance of candle holders glued to bowls. Obviously, their’s is one piece, but you can accomplish the same look for 2$ and some  hot glue.

Admittedly, they are lovely…but  I’m cheap!

So here’s what I did for a Valentine’s theme vase.

Two Dollar Store vases

Fill with Dollar Store fillers.

I also frequent local Thrift-Stores. Stay away from fabric items that can retain bed bugs. Everything else, you can scrub in the garage prior to entry. Bed bugs can also hide in the crevices of dressers. So be  wary. Those are items you have to bite the bullet on, but can often find fabulous sales if you do your homework.

Today’s find was just what I was looking for! Two tall candle sticks.

15780762_1378223942212049_8168599998414479714_n

A side note: These candle holders were $1.40  each at the Thrift-Store.

Here’s the average price on Google’s Shop Search:

(Remember, it’s about the ‘look’. These are decorative items.)

I sincerely believe…Hot Glue is the answer to all the world’s problems.

Have fun with it. Every now and then grab a couple items. Keep in mind your overall theme. And never pay full price. You’re paying for a label. I’ve never gone into someones home and started looking at the labels on the bottoms of their decor. Nobody does that, unless of course…they lack manners. (Or it’s your best friend, then by all means…share you money saving tips!)

Here was a fun one I did last night….Clearly I have Valentine’s Day on the brain. With this many hints literally right in front of him,  hopefully  my husband will remember it!

On a side note: Those adorable 3-D hearts, came from  Pat Catans. They were $2  and already had built in foam tape on their backs.

Most of us already own stuff that we can up-cycle or refurb. Take a look  around. What are you sick of looking?  Give it a fresh new look. And check out the Flea Markets, Thrift-Stores and Dollar Stores, before you spend your hard earned cash.

gdg

While I enjoy the look of the ladder, paying $249-$429 to enjoy the look of the ladder…is nuts. Buy some wood at Home Depot and knock yourself out. Obviously, they don’t need to be sturdy. They are decorative.

OUTSIDE IN

Update: A neighbor gave us a free table! I love freebies!

And now we are only waiting on one more tank. Two came today.

——

We are genuinely having a lot of fun with this bedroom makeover. And hey…science!
So my youngest son was in serious need of a room makeover. He’s outgrown Minecraft and quite frankly, so have I. As he has taken an interest in things that crawl and swim, we’ve decided on a ‘living bedroom’.

Last week, he picked out his first lizard habitat! He brought home an anole, which he lovingly named ‘Psycho’. (It’s a tad fast and crazy). And rather than using the plastic decor, he read up and decided to use science. He created a living habitat.

13323174_1177851968915915_6029788911470351801_o.jpg

Creating a live habitat is time consuming, but worth it. Just be prepared to make a mess in the kitchen. (Rocks, sticks, etc…require boiling or baking to kill any bacteria, when collected directly from nature).

We painted over the Minecraft decor, to create a colorful bush. We’re planning to paint in some snakes and lizards.

13329366_1177685352265910_435348768766423829_o.jpg

We added a rugged looking wood pallet, to add to the outdoor ambience. It also makes a great fishing pole holder! ( We also need to replace a missing drawer knob and finish unscrewing the pieces from the closing doors. At one point that dresser/lizard set-up was a tv stand…I prefer seeing a reptile there).

13394023_1178550242179421_4897361139579419450_n.jpg

Currently, we are in the process of building a tree. Yes..building a tree (below).

13269283_1178558882178557_8211218529026624465_n.jpg

And we hung some fishing floats and bobbers, on the branches above his window. It’s a work in progress.

Of course…#zombies…

13344642_1178550262179419_3969010690756022693_n.jpg

Hey…I have to pick my battles. And he’s a Walking Dead fan.

At the moment, we are waiting on three more tanks. They are 10, 7.5 and 2.5 gallon aquariums.

13346819_1178545372179908_5359075656882428810_n

He’s positive he wants a beta. No goldfish, as none of these tanks are large enough. Goldfish are not meant for bowls or small tanks. I have never understood why anyone would even do that. They get huge in the wild and produce an insane amount of amonia…but to each his/her own. Possibly tetras?

Years ago, I had a wonderful tank. 50 gallons and it was my pride enjoy. Then life happened. Fortunately, I kept my favorite book EVER, and found it last week in the basement.

13331090_1178560882178357_2278403628472356334_n

He’s been engrossed for several days now. I told him the rule of thumb: If the book says the fish requires 10 gallons…just double it, to be on the safe side. And get a filter that goes over the size required for the tank. Past experience shows, he can’t really mess it up if he follows those rules.

For the basic set-up on the 10 gallon, we went to the river to collect rocks. Then we boiled them to kill the bacteria. They should be all set by the time the tanks get here. Now we just need to find a suitable subtrate. (Except for the Sponge Bob tank…he wants that one just the way it is).

So for now…we wait…

Once the tanks get here and he’s figured out what fish he would like to raise, we’ll post an update. I’m happy he’s found a hobby that requires both science and heart. With those two things, life is just….more.

Top 10 Interior Design Ideas for 2016

02-pantone-fashion-color-report-2016-spring-summer

Spring is in the air and according to the  PANTONE  Fashion Color Report, it’s going to  be a bright one. Plenty of color and contrast, in every shade of the rainbow.

Last night I began my own interior design project for spring. Luckily I picked a neutral living room set, leaving me plenty of ways to swap my colors as the seasons change. Although I still have a short shopping list. Ok…maybe it’s a long one. I’m indecisive. But here’s my list:

  • One large green lamp
  • One small rose lamp
  • Fresh cut flowers…by the dozens
  • One large throw rug
  • One large photo canvas depicting my lunch from last week: img_2935-1
  • Four mini photo canvas. I’m undecided as to which photos to use.
  • Several large colorful bamboo sticks

Currently, I am here:

Day 1 of my spring remodel

I’ve still got miles of color to play with and plenty of imagination. Just yesterday, I picked up some fun kitchen decor:

12512249_1140307189337060_163754175079773804_n

The pot was $1.50 and the flower cup was .50

And a really fun Alphabet table:

12928374_1140295256004920_602969739085207189_n

Found for $3 at the local thriftstore.

In the meantime, I’ve compiled a list of Top 10 Interior Design Ideas for Spring 2016.

Did I mention I ADORE this years color palette???

iPhone: Photography

My job took me on a walk-about today. Spring days like today,  are the reason my phone is glued to my hip. While I have had an android, I prefer the iPhone for photos. Yes. I’m an Apple gal. For a while we had an ongoing battle in this house, pertaining to cell phones. Sort of like the Twilight thing….Team Jacob vs. Team Edward. Eventually, I persuaded them all over to my side.

The first four photos are of our town cemetery. While many go to mourn, twice as many go for the beauty. My family is buried here as well. Often I have both visited family and sat down to read.

12795260_1125907400777039_3815062067444788841_n

I think it goes without saying, that this particular cemetery is rather photogenic. Although I suppose for all of us, one is favored above all others.

946200_1125908784110234_2621069003163256239_n

As a child, this was a fascinating place. Not only because my mother brought me here to visit family, but because of the multitude of little hiding places. I suppose that is why I took the photos. The existance of this place, shows the human frailty that will one day keep me from visiting.

1918118_1125906157443830_5582512196712465294_n12321212_1125908724110240_2889108840838866971_n

Park Ave……

I think I have stood on this street, more than any other. It’s the center…the little space that brings the town together. The buildings are magnificently kept up. And when I say everybody knows everybody…I mean it. Small town America is not just a phrase. It genuinely exists.

10329207_1125907600777019_4657102150860983786_n12495069_1125934507440995_6606174647159171228_n.jpg

I’m not thrilled about the lines in the next one. Believe it or not, the left wall is actually bowed a bit. I hate it when that happens. It’s misery to line up.

The barber…actually, we have several. This one just happens to be very photogenic …and it was in my line of vision today.

Chobani Cookie Cups

These tart little appetizers are perfect for Super Bowl Sunday. Combing chocolate, strawberry, cookies, peanut butter and Chobani yogurt….they pack quite the kick. And they honestly don’t take that long to make.

What you will need:

  • 1 Cup Chobani Vanilla Yogurt
  • 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1 TSP Cocoa Powder
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (chilled)
  • Fresh Strawberries
  • Mini-Cupcake Tin

The yogurt needs to be Chobani. The reason for this, is consistency. Chobani yogurt is thicker. Most yogurts are watery and have more of a ‘globule’ feel. The problem with watery yogurt comes in to play, when the cookie cups grow soggy. So avoid that.

Begin with preparing your cookie dough. You can make the dough or buy ready made dough, either will work, but make sure it’s been chilled.

Start by filling a mini cupcake tin with cookie dough. Grease the tin if your cookie recipe requires it.

Bake  according to cookie recipe. Do not over cook. Towards the end, push down gently on each ‘muffin’ shaped cookie. This creates a slight pit.

While the cookie cups are baking, prepare the topping. 1/2 cup of peanut-butter, 1 cup of Chobani Vanilla Yogurt, 1 tsp. cocoa powder.

I used a NutriBullet to mix, but mixing with a spatula will work just fine. If you decide to use a NutriBullet, know that it will be quite thick, but do not add anything else. Thick is KEY!1382339_1090153571019089_2298197039919357125_n

With the filling is done, you can now prepare your cookie cups. Let them cool upside down, then put them in their serving dishes.

Fill each cookie cup with the Chobani mix.

This is honestly, one of my favorites. They appear to be so complicated, and yet they’re very simple. My family loves them and it never takes them long to finish off a batch. As always, feel free to modify. I could certainly envision this recipe with oatmeal raisin cookies and a blueberry topping. Check here for more  Chobani recipes.
